Sibuyan Island residents oppose mining operations

Residents from Sibuyan Island have expressed their opposition against the alleged illegal mining operations of Altai Mining Company.

The residents gathered on Sunday and held a rally, as they demand for the immediate halt of the alleged mining operations.

Elizabeth Ibañez, Coordinator of Sibuyanons Against Mining (SAM), said that the residents were demanding the release of documents that show that the operations are legal.

The protesters sought to produce barangay clearance, municipal business permit, foreshore lease contract, among others.

Meanwhile, San Fernando Mayor Nanette Tansingco said in a Facebook post that the matter is being taken care of and legal actions are being done.

“As we face one of our island’s greatest battles, please know that we are one in protecting our only home. But, know also that we have different functions. As your Municipal Mayor, my function is to abide by the laws and execute them,” Tansingco said.

“Rest assured that matters are being taken cared of and legal actions are being done and will be done, with or without postings in social media,” she added.
