Albay Vice Gov. Grex Lagman blasts US Supreme Court Justice, glad that PH justices retire at 70

Some people don’t get better with age.

Albay Vice Gov. Grex Lagman is glad that Supreme Court justices in the Philippines have to retire at 70, unlike in the United States where they serve for life.

This is because Lagman is incensed at the hypocrisy of US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who said the tribunal should revisit the cases that upheld the legality of contraceptive use and the constitutionality of same sex marriage.

Thomas said U.S. privacy laws were flawed in his concurring opinion in the case that overturned Roe v. Wade, which protected abortion rights.

Lagman noted that when Thomas was first appointed, there was much hope and promise seen in him as he was the second African-American to be named to the court.

But he said Thomas has since deteriorated and his story is becoming an American judicial tragedy.

Because of this, Lagman thinks there is wisdom in the provision of the 1987 constitution that puts the retirement age of judges and justices at 70.

A good number of learned people deteriorate as they age, he said, and cited as example a former UP political science professor who would soon be part of the Marcos cabinet.

Should there be an age limit for presidential appointees?

“Clarence Thomas is a hypocrite justice. I am beside

myself how this man has asserted that the United States Supreme Court should REVISIT cases that uphold the legality of contraceptive use and the constitutionality of same sex marriage. He has argued that U.S. privacy laws are flawed in his concurring opinion in Dobbs which overturned Roe v. Wade. His judgeship in the US SC was initially met with hope and promise as the second African American jurist to be appointed in his country’s highest court in 1991. Over the decades his mind has deteriorated. Now he is fast becoming a story about American judicial tragedy.

Maybe there’s actually wisdom in our 1987 Constitution that limits the tenure of a judge to 70 years of age. Marami-rami na rin ang tumatanda ng paurong. Look at this former UP political science professor who will soon be in Pres.-elect BBM’s cabinet. Oh my god. Good luck sa NSA at sa ATC,” Lagman posted.
