Lagman to next admin: Allow critical dissent, respect independence of House minority
Reelected Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman on Sunday called on the next administration to “allow critical dissent to flourish and respect the independence” of the minority bloc in the incoming 19th Congress.
Lagman made the statement as major political parties started to align themselves with the incoming leadership of the House of Representatives.
“I am urging the incoming administration not to perpetuate the stratagem of the majority leadership of anointing a Minority Leader in the House of Representatives as an adjunct of the majority coalition,” said Lagman in a statement.
Lagman said, “legislation must pass deliberate consultation as well as the furnace of serious debate.”
“The hallmark of a deliberative assembly is the genuine existence and steadfast advocacy of the minority,” Lagman added.
Hours before the first State of the Nation Address of presumptive president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on July 25, members of the House of Representatives will elect the Speaker.
Those who will vote for the winning Speaker will be part of the majority bloc while those who will not will comprise the minority bloc. Lawmakers also have an option not to align themselves with either the majority or minority and become independent lawmakers.
