Masbate BM Arevalo stresses importance of presidential debates in democracy
Masbate Senior Provincial Board Member Jason Arevalo has stressed the importance of facing presidential debates during elections.
He said that in progressive democracies like the US and other first world countries, presidential debates are an “electoral staple.”
“Debates empower the voters to make informed choices and motivate candidates to zero in on policy issues of public consequence,” said Arevalo.
“So crucial debates are that they can make or unmake a candidacy. With debates, people are not only able to gauge a candidate’s competence and clarity of purpose but also they are able to pierce through a candidate’s character and ability to handle stress and extreme opposition,” he added.
Nine out of 10 presidential bets are attending the debate organized by the Commission on Elections. Only Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. decided to ditch the event.
“Only in the Philippines you have people salivating to be president and yet shying away from debates. And which is worse, with followers rejoicing and celebrating they do,”said Arevalo.
“No wonder our level of political maturity is so behind. No wonder we keep electing the wrong ones. No wonder we remain so Third World,” he added.
