Masbate BM Arevalo: Why give claim stubs during political rally?
Masbate Senior Provincial Board Member Jason Arevalo questioned the distribution of “claim” stubs to persons attending a political rally.
“I don’t want to impute ‘hakot’ but when you distribute claim stubs to hundreds of people not your family or friends during a rally, what is there to think of?” he asked.
Arevalo, without dropping the name of the politikos involved, was wondering the reason behind the list of attendees.
“And why the list? For liquidation purposes? For payment?” He said that these factors are contrary to volunteerism.
“A centralized system of listing, distribution and liquidation militates against any intimation of bayanihan or pintakasi as we call it here,” he said.
“In Pink-initiated community pantries and community feeding (before the same were stopped under pain of violating election laws), the volunteers never gave out claim stubs, much less made lists. They only took pictures,” he added, referring to the initiative of the supporters of Vice President Leni Robredo.
“We hope to see transformational politics take root in this country. We begin by renouncing patronage politics in whatever form. Enough of predation and exploitation of the poor and those at the margins,” he said.
“One can only wish they did this during all those lockdowns and calamities as VP Leni and other volunteers did. In those difficult times. When it mattered most,” he added.
