DOH Bicol launches vaccination for 5 to 11 years old

The Department of Health in Bicol has rolled out the vaccination for children aged 5 to 11 years old with two vaccination areas serving as the kick-off sites.

The kick-off sites for pediatric vaccination in the region were SM City Legazpi and Bicol Medical Center in Naga City.

To officially commence the pediatric vaccination at SM City Legazpi, a short ceremony was held. Present were representatives from the Department of Health Bicol Center for Health Development (DOH Bicol CHD), Assistant Regional Director Dr. Ferchito L. Avelino and Albay Provincial DOH Officer Dr. Joseph Richard Garay.

Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal and other representatives from LGU Legazpi, SM City Legazpi, and Police Regional Office 5 also graced the event.

Meanwhile, the vaccination site at BMC kick-started the pediatric vaccination by decorating the site similarly to a children’s party to provide a more relaxing environment for children.

The launch at BMC was graced by Medical Center Chief II Dr. Ronnie Gigantone III, Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Joey Ranola III, Chief of Medical and Professional Staff II Dr. Mary Jane Uy, and Chair of BMC Department of Pediatrics Dr. Myla Baturiano.

Dr. Monrey Isaiah Mancilla, Regional COVID-19 Vaccination Program Coordinator, emphasized the importance of having children vaccinated against COVID-19.

“Bilang doctor, ayaw namin makakita ng batang may sakit. Gusto namin lahat ng bata ay healthy. Para makamit ito, kailangan kumpleto ang health services na makukuha nila, kasama na ang mga bakuna.”

The Pfizer vaccine is the only vaccine to date that has been granted by the Philippine Food and Drug Authority with Emergency Use Authorization for children aged 5 to 11 years old.

While the two vaccination sites have already begun inoculating children, other vaccination sites have scheduled pediatric vaccination in the following weeks.
