The Department of Health – Bicol Center for Health Development (DOH Bicol CHD), together with the Energy Development Corporation (EDC), recently spearheaded the blessing and inauguration of the Molecular Laboratory and the Enteric Bacteriology and Water Analysis Laboratory of Bicol South Luzon-Sub National Reference Laboratory.
The facilities have been upgraded in partnership with the EDC which provided the funding, amounting to P4.2 million.
“The Molecular Laboratory was expanded and refurbished to house additional RT-PCR machines and the new Class III Biosafety Cabinet to better cascade its COVID-19 testing capacity, while the Water Laboratory was expanded, refurbished, and relocated from BSL-SNRL to DOH Bicol CHD compound to improve its bacteriology testing,” said the department.
Dr. Ferchito L. Avelino, Assistant Regional Director of DOH Bicol CHD, in a zoom message, emphasized the importance of improving the two laboratories to meet the challenges of the times in terms of testing and to welcome future projects with the EDC.
“Essential to the COVID-19 pandemic and the many health adversities, the EDC has helped improve the overall state of the two laboratories. I hope that this partnership between DOH Bicol CHD and EDC produces more projects that will bolster our public health system in the long run,” Dr. Avelino said.
Mr. Eduardo L. Jimenez, Head Corporate of Social Responsibility EDC- Bacman Geothermal, explained the formed alliance of the EDC and DOH Bicol CHD that paved the way to the success of the project through a short video presentation.
“Aside from the COVID-19 lab, the Enteric Bacteriology and Water Analysis Lab was also relocated to its newly rehabilitated and refurbished facility. In less than a semester, the expanded laboratories are now operational and have been serving their purpose already,” Ms. Regina Victoria J.
