Masbate BM Arevalo says Filipino nurses are heroes, not commodities

Masbate Senior Provincial Board Member Jason Arevalo has slammed the proposal to send Filipino nurses to United Kingdom in exchange of coronavirus vaccines.

The Masbate politiko said that our nurses are not commodities and cannot be the subject of a barter.

“Our nurses are beyond the commerce of men. They cannot be the proper subject of a barter. Good enough the UK Government rejects attempts to commodify our health workers in exchange for vaccines,” said Arevalo.

“Institutionalized slavery is long rejected by civilized societies as it objectifies people,” he added.

Arevalo also noted that the current government is not advancing in this area.

“Worse, it is trying to circumvent and reinvent the concept in the name of national health interest,” said Arevalo.

“Foreign diplomacy is so rude and insensitive in these times. When governments trade their nurses for vaccines, human lives get cheaper, too,” he added.

Arevalo also stressed that in the war against COVID-19, these nurses are our heroes. “They are not objects. Needless, inanimate things can never be heroes.”
