Palawan BM wants to set minimum price for palay

The Palawan Sangguniang Panlalawigan is pushing for the enactment of an ordinance that will set the minimum price of palay in the province.

Board Member Albert G. Rama served as the proponent of the measure in order to protect farmers and their livelihood.

“Mr. Presiding Officer, this representation is proposing an ordinance prescribing the classification and the corresponding minimum buying price for palay, in such a way na hindi naman po…kung hindi man sila kumita ay huwag naman malugi,” Rama said during his privilege speech.

“Doon po sa nasabing ordinansa, ang pinakamababa pong presyo ‘yong labas ng thresher na sinasabi nila ay itinatakda po natin sa 13 pesos. Kung ang magsasaka po ay gumagastos ng almost 13 pesos per kilo sana naman po huwag naman bumaba sa 13 pesos din po ang bili ng kanilang palay” added BM Rama.

The Board Member also shared the plight of farmers amid the rising prices of fertilizers for their produce.

“Sa ngayon, wala umanong batas na nagpoprotekta sa mga magsasaka partikular sa minimum na halaga sa bentahan ng palay kaya’t nararapat lamang umano na magkaroon ng ordinansa ukol rito upang maprotektahan ang tinatawag na ‘backbone of the nation’ dahil sila ang nagpo-produce ng pagkain sa pang-araw araw,” the Capitol said.

The said proposed ordinance was supported by BM Cesareo Benedito, Jr. and referred the same to the Committee on Agriculture and Aquatic Resources.
