Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co has asked the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to limit mining and quarrying activities in Mayon Volcano following the damage caused by Typhoon Rolly to nearby communities.

Co said only heavily silted rivers in Mayon’s gullies must be designated for mining or quarrying.

“We must learn our lesson: we can save many lives if we ban over extraction of aggregates in Mt. Mayon,” he said.

“Over extraction leads to death and destruction. We cannot sacrifice lives and properties just for the benefit of a few,” the lawmaker added.

Typhoon Rolly, the strongest typhoon on earth so far for this year, caused strong lahar flow from Mayon volcano’s slopes when it made landfall on Sunday, November 1, in the Bicol region.

Around 300 houses in Guinobatan town were buried under mud and volcanic rocks due to the typhoon.
