Albay Sanggunian tells DOH: Let health experts lead the fight against COVID-19 pandemic

The Albay Sangguniang Panlalawigan has passed a resolution urging the Health department to consider the “scientific inputs and recommendations” of the medical community in its battle against COVID-19 pandemic.

“A scientific approach involves the decisive implementation of mass testing, the strict isolation of those infected and the quarantine of their contacts, as well as accurate case tracking and widespread contact-tracing,” the resolution authored by Albay Vice Governor Edcel Grex Lagman read.

Just recently, the medical community has sent a “distress call” stating that this scientific approach has been lacking in DOH’s COVID-19 response and can lead to the collapse of our health care system;

“The primary reason that South Korea, Taiwan, and New Zealand are winning the Covid-19 war is a science-based approach that their health experts adopt,” the resolution stated.

“Following this approach, the SPA calls for the DOH to create a rapid response team of trained medical workers to prevent our health system from crashing, i.e., hiring more doctors, nurses, and other medical staff,” it added.

The Albay SP also noted that the DOH needs to provide sufficient hazard pay, accommodation, transport, personal protective equipment; as well as psychosocial, emotional, mental support to all our health care frontliners;

“A clear roadmap and technical assistance at the national level is needed more than ever to ensure that local government units such as the LGUs in Albay shall effectively put in place effective contact tracing operations,” the resolution stated.

“The DOH is the lead agency in the COVID-19 Interagency Task Force and it is high time that they live out the mandate and let the health experts lead the fight against this national health crisis,” the resolution added.
