The Department of Transportation announced that despite the pandemic, the construction of Bicol International Airport (BIA) in Daraga, Albay still continues.
The DOTr shared a video of the construction of the BIA which showed the majestic MAyon Volcano as the backdrop.
“Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, construction of the airport continues, while adhering to strict health and safety protocols,” said the department.
“The video shows the ongoing runway extension works at the BIA. Originally planned at 2,100 meters, the runway is being lengthened by another 400 meters to total 2,500 meters to accommodate more international flights,” it added.
The DOTr said that the runway completion is part of the Bicol International Airport Development Project Package 2B, which also involves the construction of the passenger terminal building, taxiway, drainage, and other site development works.
Package 2A, on the other hand, involves the construction of landside facilities such as site development and other buildings.
“Package 2A is now 80% complete, while Package 2B is 31% complete,” said the Transportation department.
“Once completed, the BIA, perhaps the MOST SCENIC GATEWAY, is expected to boost air traffic and tourist arrivals in Bicol, and thus, propel the province of Albay to become an economic powerhouse,” it added.
