Something fishy? Occidental Mindoro mayor helping men on sunken PH boat suspended for graft


San Jose, Occidental Mindoro Mayor Romulo Festin has been suspended by the for 90 days without pay by the Sandiganbayan 3rd Division due to the graft charges he is facing.

In a resolution, the anti-graft court pointed out that preventive suspension is mandatory under the the Anti Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

The court indicated that “once the information is found to be sufficient in form and substance, then the court must issue the order of suspension as a matter of course.”

“This is because a preventive suspension is not a penalty. It is not imposed as a result of judicial proceedings,” the court explained.

It also assured that should he get acquitted he “shall be entitled to reinstatement and to the salaries and benefits which he failed to receive during the suspension.”

Festin is facing three graft charges in connection with the anomalous purchase of vehicles and disbursement of salaries.
