Naga City Mayor John Bongat has announced that the city government will double the compensation received by the war veterans in the city.

Mayor Bongat made the announcement during the celebration of the 77th Araw ng Kagitingan and Philippine Veterans Week commemoration yesterday, April 9.

Currently, war veterans receive P5,000.00 remuneration yearly from the city governement to pay “tribute and honor their heroic deeds during the wars that greatly affected the Philippine nation.”

“In his speech during the tribute program for the war veterans at the Naga City People’s Hall, attended by the city and barangay officials, DepEd officials and personnel, unified troops, and city government employees among others, Mayor Bongat retold of the hardships that the veterans experienced and so deemed to double the amount of stipend that they are receiving— from P 5,000.00 to P 10,000.00,” said the city government.

According to the city, the request of Mayor Bongat addressed to the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) of Naga was immediately supported by Vice Mayor Nelson Legacion and the SP council.

“Vice Mayor Legacion agreed to the same proposal as the city’s expression of gratefulness and honor to all the veterans’ noble deeds and sacrifices for the freedom that the present generation has now been enjoying,” said the city.

Naga City said that it has 12 war veterans at present who served during the Philippine American War, World War II and Korean Campaign.
