‘Di ito pasikatan! Robredo: Competence, not fame should be basis for voting senators

Vice President Leni Robredo on Wednesday (March 20) urged voters to choose wisely in the upcoming elections amid the poor showing of the “Otso Diretso” slate in the senatorial surveys.

At the sidelines of an engagement in Pangasinan, Robredo said voters should choose candidates who they feel can best represent them.

“So sana, hindi siya nakabase sa popularity. Kasi kung ang basehan lang, popularity, may undue advantage iyong mga may pera para i-promote iyong sarili nila,” she said.

Robredo said choosing competent senators is important because of the role the Senate will play in the last three years of the Duterte administration.

She cited the pending bills on federalism, restoration of death penalty and lowering the age of criminal liability as among the issues that senators have to deal with.

“So itong mga bagay na pag-uusapan, hindi ito basta-basta. Kahit sa anong body, mahalaga iyong galing sa iba’t ibang paniniwala, kasi iyon iyong makaka-ensure sa atin na mayroong healthy na debate,” she said.

Robredo said it will be better if the next set of senators will come from diverse backgrounds so that healthy debates will happen in the Senate on controversial bills.

The latest Pulse Asia survey on the senatorial race showed Mar Roxas as the lone opposition candidate who entered the so-called “Magic 12” list of candidates with a statistical chance of winning.

The other members of the Otso Diretso slate are: Senator Bam Aquino, Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano, former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay, former Quezon Rep. Erin Tañada, abogados Chel Diokno and Romy Macalintal, and former Marawi civic leader Samira Gutoc.
