VP Robredo on Batocabe’s killing: This impunity must end

Vice President Leni Robredo said that the culture of impunity must end as she condemned the killing of Ako Bicol partylist Rep. Rodel Batocabe.

The Vice President recalled that Batocabe, her fellow Bicolano, was his batchmate in University of the Philippines and her colleague in the 16th Congress.

“He was smart and eloquent, witty and cheerful, a person who lived life to the fullest. He will be missed, both for his service and his friendship,” Robredo said.

Batocabe and his aide were ambushed in Daraga last Saturday after attending a gift giving activity for senior citizens and PWDs.

“But beyond my personal grief at his passing, is the growing rage at yet another brazen murder, committed in broad daylight, in the middle of a crowd. This cannot, and must not be the new normal; when Filipinos, young and old, rich and poor, are gunned down in cold blood as a matter of course, and where none of us can feel safe,” the Vice President said.

“This impunity must end.”

Robredo also expressed her condolences to the family and friends of Batocabe.

“I extend my deepest condolences to his wife, Gertie, his children, and his family, and join the call for swift justice to be meted out to those responsible for his murder,” she said.

Batocabe was serving his last term as Ako Bicol partylist representative. He was vying for mayor of Daraga this coming 2019 elections.
