Catanduanes Rep. Cesar Sarmiento has called the attention of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) over the issue of proliferation of fake accounts across various social media sites.

The House of Representatives held today the deliberation of the budget proposal of the DICT for 2019.

“Sa Budget Hearing ng Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), pinagusapan ang isang nakakabahalang issue ngayon sa usapin ng Cyber Security; ang kumakalat na FAKE ACCOUNTS sa iba’t ibang social media platforms na nagpapahayag ng maling impormasyon, pangbu-bully, paninira at panlilinlang,” Sarmiento’s office said.

“Ayon kay Cong CS bagamat nagsisimula sa maliit na issue, maaring gamitin ng ilan para magkalat ng kaguluhan on a national scale kagaya ng Bomb threats, terrorism or kidnap for ransom,” it added.

Meanwhile, DICT Secretary Eliseo Rio vowed to take action over the matter.

“Ayon kay DICT Secretary Eliseo Rio may sinasagawa na silang proseso para mapigilan ang ganitong uri ng krimen,” said Sarmiento’s office.

“Sang-ayon din siya kay Cong CS na dapat mgkaroon ng mas maayos na regulasyon ang DICT sa Facebook lalong-lalo na’t ito ang pangunahing app ng mga Pinoy,” it added.

Meanwhile, the House and the DICT agreed to conduct separate hearing on the matter.

Representatives from Facebook and other social media sites are expected to be invited.
