Typhoon Josie, habagat cause P400M damage in agri sector in Occidental Mindoro


Partial reports showed that Typhoon Josie and habagat may have caused P400 million in damage to agriculture sector in Occidental Mindoro.

Sofronio Baranda, OIC of the Office of the Provincial Agriculture, presented the report during a dialogue with farmers and fisherfolk yesterday.

Reported partial damages to agriculture due to Habagat caused by Typhoon Josie are the following:

1. High-Value Crops P17,275,890.00
2. Fisheries (Mamburao) P3,500,000.00
3. Corn Damage (6 LGUs) P17,756,500.00
4. Rice Damage province-wide P180, 870,613.00
5. Fisheries (San Jose & Calintaan) P32,160,540.00

Meanwhile, Ed Payas of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said that “the estimated damages to fishery sector is P126,744,000.00 in San Jose, Magsaysay and Rizal covering 3,000 hectares as of this report.”

RTD Ronie Panoy of DA-MIMAROPA also distributed nine boxes of various vegetable seeds and committed 10,000 bags of palay seeds.

Rep. Josephine Ramirez Sato has also requested other forms of subsidies and assistance for the farmers and fisherfolk from the DA.

“Tulong tulong po tayong tumindig, magplano at sama samang magtulungan at ipakita ang kabayanihan ng bawat isang Mindoreño,” Vice Gov Peter de Jesus Alfaro said as he reminded the residents to be resilient.
