Wag puro salita! Albay Rep. Lagman tells Duterte admin to end growing culture of impunity

Opposition solon Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman told President Rodrigo Duterte to “dismantle” the growing culture of impunity instead of just “mere ritual responses” following the killing of Bicol-based broadcast journalist Joey Llana.

Llana was ambushed in front of his house in Daraga, Albay last week. He was en route to his work at the DWZR Zoom Radio when the incident happened.

“It is not enough for the Duterte administration to vow swift justice for slain Albay broadcaster Joey Llana,” Rep. Lagman said in a statement.

“It is also urgent for the government to immediately dismantle the growing culture of violence and impunity which emboldens assassins to murder journalists, local politicians, priests and ordinary citizens,” he added.

The solon also said that “knee-jerk reactions are mere ritual responses.”

Lagman also told the administration to zero in on the administrations policies on crime prevention.

“What is necessary is a complete overhaul of the administration’s policies on crime prevention, adherence to due process and disavowal of violence and impunity,” he said.

Albay Governor Al Francis Bichara earlier condemned the killing of Llana.

“Governor Al Francis Bichara and the Provincial Government of Albay strongly condemns the brutal murder of broadcaster Joey Llana. In no uncertain term is killing justified under any circumstances,” the provincial government said in a statement.

“More so that Llana was a member of the media. The killing of a journalist has a chilling effect on the freedom of speech. The muzzling of a free press is anathema to democracy,” said Bichara.

The governor called on the the authorities to immediately probe the killing and make the people behind the death of Llana pay for the crime.
