UP Los Baños grad students start environmental assessment on Calapan’s Caluangan Lake

Graduate students from the University of the Philippines Los Baños has started conducting Environmental Impact Assesment (EIA) on Caluangan Lake, which covers five barangays in Calapan City.

“Dumating sa Lungsod ng Calapan ang pitong graduate students ng U.P. Los Banos upang magsagawa ng malalimang pag-aaral ukol sa Environmental Impact Assesment (EIA) ng kilalang Caluangan Lake na sakop ng mga Barangay Wawa,Tawagan, Masipit, Canubing 1 at Baruyan Lungsod ng Calapan,” the city government said.

The students started their assessment yesterday and will last until June 30.

The 7-man team has also paid courtesy visit to Calapan City Vice Mayor Gil Ramirez, together with City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Wilfredo Landicho and the Staff of Calapan City Fisheries Management.

“Mainit ang naging pagtanggap ni Vice Mayor Ramirez sa 7 graduate students ng U.P. Los Banos at lubos na ikinatuwa nito ang isasagawang masusing pag-aaral sa Caluangan Lake,” the city government said.

“Ayon kay VM Ramirez, tamang tama ang pagkakataon na magkaroon ng malalim na pag-aaral sa Caluangan Lake dahil isa aniya sa mga requirements na hinihingi ng Environmetal Management Bureau (EMB) sa Pamahalaang Lungsod ng Calapan ay ang kalidad ng tubig ng Caluangan Lake bago maaprubahan ang anumang planong proyekto para rito,” it added.

Alvaro T. Dioquino Jr., Team Leader ng of the said EIA for Caluangan Lake, his group will work alongside the city government in assessing the lake.

“Kaugnay nito, sinabi rin ng mga taga U.P. Los Banos graduate school na iminungkahi rin sa kanilang grupo ni Dr. Rico Ancog, Ecosystem Service and Environmental Policy Laboratory School of Environmental Science and Management ng U.P. Los Banos na makabubuting magsagawa ng pag-aaral sa Caluangan Lake bilang suporta na rin sa isinasagawang Master Development Plan ng nasabing Lawa,” the city government said.
