Albay set to hold first grassroots sports summit next month

A grassroot level sports summit will be hosted by the provincial government of Albay this summer together with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Bicol University.

The sports summit will be for local government units, schools, colleges and universities that will be held at the Albay Astrodome and BU grounds starting April 10 to 14.

“The said sports summit will include a two-day sports consultative meeting and a four-day grassroots coaching and officiating course in basketball, volleyball, baseball, athletics, football, and boxing,” the province said.

Governor Al Francis Bichara, a well known sports enthusiast, gave its full support to the summit and was “instrumental in the initial phase of planning for the said summit.”

Bichara said that it is his duty to provide opportunities to improve in sports.

“We need to provide the Albayano youth all the instruments and opportunities they can get their hands on so that they may excel in sports. As the governor, it is my duty to deliver these needs,” Bichara was quoted as saying.

PSC program coordinator for Albay James Nunez said that the commission “is equally enthusiastic in supporting the said activity with hopes that with the combined efforts of the agencies involved, Albay sports will experience a huge leap in progress to benefit the youth and the whole country.”

The province said that the sports tilt aims to produce “world-class” athletes that can represent Albay in national and international competitions.
