Ex-Cam Sur mayor Sarmiento pleads guilty, fined P2,000 for using luxury vehicles of contractor

Former Garchitorena, Camarines Sur mayor Jesus Rico Sarmiento has been fined P2,000 for using the luxury vehicles of a private contractor.

The Sandiganbayan 7th Division imposed the fine after Sarmiento pleaded guilty to violating the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.

“Having appreciated in his favor the mitigating circumstance of the guilty plea, accused is imposed the…fine of P2,000,” read the court’s resolution.

Otherwise, Sarmiento could have been slapped with imprisonment of up to five years and a fine of P5,000 should the court found him guilty.

Under the Code, public officials and employees are prohibited from soliciting or accepting “directly or indirectly any gift, gratuity, favor, entertainment, loan or anything of monetary value from any person in the course of their official duties or in connection with any operation being regulated by, or any transaction which may be affected by the functions of their office.”
