Kakalampag oto mo dito: Road obstructions a persistent problem for Bicol DPWH
Road obstructions remain a big headache for the Department of Public Works and Highways in Bicol, causing recent accidents that killed two people and injured the son of a DPWH official.
Because of these incidents, DPWH assistant regional director Esmeraldo Sarmiento appealed to motorists and the public for extra patience.
Citing data from the Philippine National Police, the DPWH said more than 3,800 road accidents occurred in Albay alone in 2016. Nearly 8,000 road accidents occurred between 2015 and 2016.
Albay Rep. Fernando Gonzalez said the DPWH cannot widen a road without first removing the squatters in the area.
On the other hand, students from Bicol University criticized the DPWH for allowing 100 old culverts dug from the kilometers-long drainage project, causing risk and discomfort for pedestrians.
Meanwhile, Fr. Efren Borromeo, parish priest of the Divine Mercy Church at Barangay Lidong, branded as “inhuman” the simultaneous roadsides concreting and uprooting of trees.
