After the impeachment of former Chief Justice Renato Corona in 2011, at least 25 congressmen are now backing up a complaint to impeach Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno including Palawan Reps Frederick Abueg and Gil Acosta.

Abueg, also the House of Representatives deputy speaker, and Acosta, a member of the PDP-Laban party, are among the representatives who called for the impeachment of Sereno for her dishonest statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN), tax misdeclarations and unauthorized expenses, a PhilStar report said.

Lawyer Larry Gadon said the complaint for Sereno’s alleged betrayal of public trust was submitted to the House secretary general Wednesday evening.

Based on the PhilStar report, the other senators who endorsed the impeachment complaint against Sereno were House Deputy Speaker Gwendolyn Garcia (Cebu), Deputy Speaker Mylene Garcia Albano (Davao City), Deputy Speaker Ferdinand Hernandez (South Cotabato), Reps. Edgar Sarmiento (Samar), Anthony Bravo (COOP NATCCO party-list), Arnel Ty (LPGMA party-list), Rodito Albano (Isabela), Francisco Matugas III (Surigao del Norte), Aurelio Gonzales (Pampanga), Federico Sandoval (Malabon), Joel Almario (Davao Oriental), Romeo Acop (Antipolo City), Bingbong Crisologo (Quezon City), Pedro Acharon Jr. (South Cotabato), XJ Romualdo (CamiguinAnn Hofer (Zamboanga Sibugay), Winnie Castelo (Quezon City), Jericho Nograles (PBA party-list), John Marvin Nieto (Manila), Robert Ace Barbers (Surigao del Norte), Roger Mercado (Southern Leyte), Jennifer Barzaga (Cavite) and Lorna Bautista-Bandigan (Davao Occidental).

Mindoro Rep Reynaldo Umali, chair of the house committee, would lead the evaluation of Sereno’s complaint, Gadon told the Star.

The House need to gather 98 signatures to send the complaint for Senate trial, the report added.
