Lagman puzzled on colleagues’ talk about martial law extension: Pinapangunahan niyo si Duterte!
Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman can’t understand why some of his colleagues are talking about extending the declaration of martial law in Mindanao when President Rodrigo Duterte has not formally asked for it.
Lagman said that under the 1987 Constitution, the extension of martial law should be the President’s initiative although it will be Congress that will approve the request in a joint session.
“Why are some Senators and Representatives talking about extending martial law in Mindanao when the President has not even officially initiated such extension?” he asked in a statement Monday (July 10).
“It stands to reason that any extension should not exceed the original maximum period of sixty (60) days as a provided in the Constitution,” Lagman added.
The prospect of extending the declaration of martial law in Mindanao appears likely since Duterte said he will not lift it before his second State of the Nation Address on July 24.
Duterte signed Proclamation No. 216 placing Mindanao under martial law on May 23.
For his part, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has proposed extending the declaration of martial law until Duterte’s term ends in 2022 to solve the problem of rebellion in Mindanao.
