Tallado eyes training facility to eliminate mercury use in mining
Camarines Norte Governor Edgar Tallado is serious with his anti-mercury use advocacy when it comes to mining.
In a Bicol Standard report Tuesday (May 9), Tallado declared his openness to establish a training facility that can process gold without the use of mercury.
The politiko, who is said to be a health advocate, aims to accomplish this in line with his support for mercury-free mining.
“We must work hard to eliminate mercury from the mining process, as it causes serious health problems not only to the miners, but also to the other members of the community,” Tallado was quoted as saying in the report.
He said that exposure to even a small amount of mercury could harm a person’s nervous, digestive and immune systems.
The provincial government is coordinating with non- government organization (NGO) Ban-Toxics to address mercury use among miners.
