Alvarez on big tax case settlements: Si Tatay Digong na ang bahala
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is leaving it up to President Rodrigo Duterte’s wisdom whether or not the government would adopt a policy of compromise settlements when it comes to big tax cases.
“That’s the decision of the executive,” Alvarez, a lawyer, said Sunday (March 26), referring to the President.
Duterte, a PDP-Laban party-mate of Alvarez’s, said earlier this month that he would accept an out-of-court settlement regarding tobacco company Mighty Corp.’s P9.6-billion tax evasion case.
The Chief Executive has since hinted that he might do the same for other big tax cases in a bid to avoid long legal battles.
At the same time, Duterte said that the money from these settlements will be used to fund social services and projects.
