May paninindigan: Cong Escudero couldn’t be swayed to OK death penalty

POLITIKO - The bible of Philippine Politics.
The issue on death penalty restoration was simply non-negotiable for Sorsogon 1st district Rep. Evelina Escudero.
In a press conference Monday (March 13), the mother of Senator Chiz Escudero revealed that the House Supermajority of which she is a part of tried to convince her to vote in favor of House Bill (HB) 4727.
“They were trying to convince me but my conscience couldn’t go with it,” said “Nanay Evie,” who was one of the 54 legislators who voted “no” to the death penalty restoration bill.
“The other measures that the the President or the House leadership would bring to Congress probably pwede naman pag-usapan yun. But not this death penalty,” she added.
Escudero entered a negative vote on HB 4727 knowing full well that she might lose her chairmanship of the Basic Education Committee.
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez earlier warned that he would remove House leaders who defy the passage of this “priority” measure.
“I have my own convictions. I guess,” she said.
