What coup? House supermajority solid as ever–Batocabe
If AKO-Bicol party-list Rep. Rodel Batocabe is to believed, then the supermajority bloc in the House of Representatives (HOR) is as solid as ever.
This, as Batocabe–the president of the party-list coalition–denied the rumors of a brewing coup against House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
“There is none, not even a whisper [about a coup],” the politiko said Thursday, February 9.
He added: “The supermajority is still strong, united and disciplined even with a highly-divisive issue like the death penalty bill.”
The coup rumors began precisely because of Alvarez’s controversial statements regarding the death penalty restoration bill.
On Wednesday, Alvarez announced that he would promptly replace deputy speakers who would oppose the death penalty restoration bill, which he described as a priority measure of the administration.
This has been described by some as an “arm-twisting” tactic that could ultimately rip the administration coalition asunder. #
