Ninja moves? Garbin slams DOF for keeping money remittance tax a ‘secret’
AKO-Bicol party-list Rep. Alfredo Garbin Jr. slammed the Department of Finance (DOF) for allegedly “hiding” details of Value-Added Tax (VAT) expansion under their proposed tax reform package.
Garbin pointed in particular to the DOF plans of taxing money remittances services in the Philippines, a move that will impact both Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and local money senders alike.
“Di ko alam yan,” admitted Garbin to reporters Monday (February 6) regarding the additional tax.
“Sa mga forum ng Department of Finance, especially kapag nag-iimbita sila, hindi naman to nadi-discuss. Mukhang tinatago nila tong expansion of VAT. They always highlight the personal income tax and tax on petroleum products,” the politiko claimed.
As for the money remittance tax itself, Garbin called it a burden to the people.
“We at AKO- Bicol we fully oppose this measure. Kasi pahirap to eh.Hindi naman gumagastos dito ang gobyerno. Hindi ka naman nagpagawa ng building or tulay, bakit mo pa ita-tax remittance ng OFW. Dapat nga bigyan ng added protection,” he explained. #
