Lagman: LP solons against death penalty; party stand ‘definite’

Albay 1st district Rep. Edcel Lagman said that his party, the Liberal Party (LP), will be among those that will provide opposition to the death penalty restoration bill being pushed by President Rodrigo Duterte’s allies in Congress.

“Most of LP members are against the reimposition of the death penalty,” he told reporters.

Moreover, Lagman said that an official party stand on the matter is forthcoming from the erstwhile ruling party.
“I think that’s definite,” claimed the Bicolano politiko.

It should be noted that the 34 LP members in the Lower Chamber are divided; 29 are in the PDP-Laban led “Supermajority” that are allied with Duterte, while five–including Lagman–are with the “Magnificent 7”.
The Magnificent 7 is the opposition bloc in the House of Representatives (HOR).

Observers have claimed that LP stalwarts in the PDP-Laban led coalition are treated like “second-class citizens” anyway, so there’s little incentive for them to kowtow on such a polarizing piece of legislation.
