Only Legazpi City has sanitary landfill in Bicol

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) bared Legazpi City in Albay is the sole local government unit (LGU) in the Bicol region to complied with Republic Act (RA) 9003, or better known as the Ecological Solid waste Management Act of 2000.

Compliance with this law involves having one’s own sanitary landfill.

This was bared by DENR Regional Director Roberto Sheen during the recent Business Community Convention which was sponsored by the Metropolitan Naga Water District.

According to the official, LGUs in the region must endeavor to close down illegal dumpsites, or else run the risk of getting slapped with charges in connection with R.A. 9003. Such charges will be filed before the Ombudsman.

Sheen noted that the law was implemented 10 years ago and thus gave the necessary warning to the LGUs.

Noel Rosal sits as Legazpi mayor.
