Duh? Sandiganbayan says LRay sealed his fate in P20M fuel scam
Camarines Sur 2nd district Rep. LRay Villafuerte sealed his own fate as far as his 90-day preventive suspension order is concerned.
The Sandiganbayan 5th division said in its seven-page resolution Friday that the House politiko had unwittingly “recognized the validity” of the graft charge against him, which led to his suspension in the first place.
Earlier, the prosecution sought the order of suspension pendente lite against the respondent, noting that it’s a mandatory move. Villafuerte countered this by asking for a pre-suspension hearing.
However, the anti-graft court said it was simply too late on the part of the solon.
“The accused prays that a pre-suspension hearing be conducted. Such prayer is however too late as he already entered his plea (not guilty) and was arraigned, thereby recognizing the validity of the Information and/or obviating the pre-suspension hearing, the purpose of which is to determine the validity of the Information,” it said in its resolution.
Villafuerte’s graft change is linked to his alleged anomalous purchase of P20 million worth of fuel from a single proprietor in 2010. The required public bidding for the transaction did not take place.
Villafuerte is a former Camarines Sur governor.
