Cesar Sarmiento puts Catanduanes in rightful place as ‘Abaca Capital’
Here’s another reason to be a proud Bicolano, if you didn’t know it already.
Catanduanes Rep. Cesar Sarmiento bared during a recent budget hearing in Congress how the Philippines dominated the world market in terms of abaca production, saying the country accounted for a whopping 87 percent of the global output last year.
It just so happens that Catanduanes is the top producer of “Manila hemp”, and in 2015 was responsible for 35 percent of the national output. On second and third place are Davao Oriental (8.5 percent) and Northern Samar (7.7 percent), respectively.
Abaca has been a cherished Philippine product for nearly a century, and it is said to have been developed in Bicolandia.
