Bicol militants light candles on death anniversary of rights worker
Bicol-based militants attended a Mass and candle lighting to mark the first death anniversary of a rights worker and radio commentator who was gunned down in Sorsogon on Aug. 19 last year.
Karapatan joined kin of Teodoro “Todoy” Escanilla in braving inclement weather to offer a tribute to him at his tomb in Barcelona town last Saturday, Bicol Today reported.
Escanilla was gunned down at his house by six men aboard three motorcycles on Aug. 20, 2015, the group said.
Karapatan Sorsogon spokesman Hermie Forton accused the Army’s 31st Infantry Battalion of the killing, adding there was “no other entity or group with a motive to kill him.”
Forton said Escanilla had linked the 31st IB to killings in the area on his radio program.
Up to now, the group lamented justice has yet to be served for Escanilla.
