Albay Rep. Joey Salceda lauded President Rodrigo Duterte and Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade for “coming closer than any administration” to completing the Bicol International Airport (BIA).

Tugade told Salceda that BIA can accommodate day flights on October 7, and night flights by November 4 and international flights by May 2022.

Salceda said “the opening of the BIA will serve as the biggest economic stimulus in our region as it will accommodate 3,000 passengers per day instead of merely 600 under the domestic Legazpi Airport.”

The solon added that the annual capacity of the BIA is 2 million passengers, “around 53% more than our foreign tourist arrivals in Albay. So, we can service the other provinces.”

The airport, Salceda added will certainly be an impetus to creating tourism alliances such as the Almasor, or the Albay-Masbate-Sorsogon grouping that I pioneered as chair of Bicol’s Regional Development Council.”

Tugade marked a historic milestone today, Friday, by successfully landing at the BIA in Daraga, Albay onboard Gulfstream 150 from Manila. He said the airport is now 90% complete.

The construction of the P4.798 billion BIA is among the priority projects under Duterte administration’s Build Build Build program.
