Free wi-fi spots to be installed in over 600 public areas in Palawan

Palaweños will soon get free internet access in select areas in the province through Department of Information and Communications Technology’s Pipol Konek.

The province said that the DICT will install free wi-fi spots in more that 600 public areas in Palawan.

The program is pursuant to the Republic Act 10929 or the“Free Internet Access in Public Places Act of 2017”.

“Layunin ng Pipol Konek Project na makapagbigay ng libreng internet access sa bansa na maaaring magpalakas ng economic, social, and educational opportunities,” the province said.

Provincial Administrator Atty. Joshua, during a meeting held yesterday, explained the mandate of the provincial government under the project.

“Kabilang sa mga tungkulin ng pamahalaang lokal ay ang planning and preparation kung saan ay magsasagawa ng validation ng mga project sites at benepisyaryo, construction, installation and management,” the province said.

“Pangangasiwaan ng PGP ang pagproseso ng mga dokumento para sa Wi-Fi Installation, at impact and sustainability monitoring na kung saan ay kailangan i-monitor ng PGP ang kalidad at reliability ng internet services at masigurong ito ay epektibong naipatutupad,” it added.

Out of 686 project sites, 356 will be placed in DepEd Computerized Program –Schools, 20 in municipal halls, 141 sa in barangay halls, and 169 in public areas.

“Katuwang ng DICT ang Pamahalaang Panlalawigan ng Palawan at United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) sa implementasyon ng proyekto,” the province said.

“Planong simulan ang pagbisita sa mga target project sites ngayong Nobyembre at pagkaraan nito ay agad na sisimulan ang Wi-Fi installation,” it added.
