San Fernando Mayor Fermin Mabulo defends the benefits of dredging
Before Filipinos condemn dredging activities, it would be good for them to look at the other side of the coin, according to San Fernando Mayor Fermin Mabulo.
On Facebook, Mabulo shared a link to a post calling for a stop to a Chinese ship’s dredging activities in the Cagayan River.
But according to him, people should look at the bigger picture.
If there would be no dredging activities, river systems would cease to exist and plains would be flooded.
Silted rivers would be unable to support the spawning of fishes, which would lead to a food security problem, he added.
There are more than one side to every activity!
“Please look at the bigger picture. If dredging will not be done on our river systems, pretty soon, we will have no rivers to speak about and our plains will be flooded. Our silted rivers can no longer accommodate spawning of fishes from the ocean so there will be food security problem,” he posted.
