Tunog diktador! Robredo wants Congress to pass law regulating social media
Vice President Leni Robredo wants Congress to pass a law regulating social media as a way of fighting the spread of fake news.
In a departure from her liberal stance on freedom of expression, Robredo on Wednesday (March 20) said the government should control social networking sites because they can be used by anyone to post fake or misleading information.
“Ako, kailangan talaga iyong Kongreso magpasa ng mga batas na kahit paano may control saka regulation iyong mga post sa social media. Kailangan iyong mga social media networks gaya ng Facebook, ng Instagram, ng You—pati nga YouTube—kailangan magkaroon ng regulation,” she said at the sidelines of an event in Pangasinan.
Robredo said those who post on social media should be held accountable like practitioners who work in traditional media like television, newspapers and radion.
“Sana iyong accountability na ine-expect from traditional media, dapat ganoon din sa social media. Kasi hindi fair sa tao, hindi fair sa tao na walang ganoong accountability. Kasi kahit anong kasinungalingan, napo-post,” she said.
Robredo said she has been a victim of fake news spread on social media, though she did not give details on the reports that have been written about her.
