Palawan Capitol aims ‘to mainstream’ disaster risk reduction in tourism sector
The Palawan Capitol has organized a symposium on Tourism Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.
The symposium was spearheaded by the Provincial Tourism Promotions and Development Department (PTPDD) and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) last March 7.
According to the Capitol, they want tourism officers as well as tourism establishments to be ready when a disaster strikes.
“We want to equip our municipal tourism officers to look into how the tourism can be affected in case may mga crisis or disaster na mangyayari considering that Palawan is prone or very vulnerable both to human-induced or natural-induced risks,” said Provincial Tourism Officer Maribel Buñi.
Meanwhile, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Jeremias Y. Alili highlighted the need of establishments to have contingency plans.
“Ilan sa mga halimbawa ng natural hazards na dapat paghandaan ng mga establisyemento ay bagyo, pagbaha, pagyanig at storm surge. Ang human-induced hazards naman ay kinabibilangan ng sunog at aksidente sa dagat,” said the Capitol.
Buñi said that the Capitol wants to “mainstream” the risk reduction in tourism plans of local government units.
“Basically we want to mainstream ‘yung risk reduction into the tourism plan or the other way around. Kasi dapat sa local tourism development plan natin ay isa sa mga components na nandoon ay ‘how do we manage risk or how do we mitigate risk?’,” she said.
