The Malacañan Palace has declared August 18 as a special non-working holiday in Naga City to commemorate the 6th death anniversary of Jesse Robredo.
“Malacanang has declared 18 August 2018, Saturday, as Special Non-Working Holiday in Naga City in commemoration of the 6th Death Anniversary of Former Naga City Mayor and Secretary of the Interior and Local Government Jesse Manalastas Robredo,” the City government said.
In its Proclamation 553, the Palace said that Robredo was “instrumental in the implementation of far-reaching reforms in local governance.”
The proclamation was signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.
Robredo served as the mayor of Naga City from 1988 to 1998 and another three terms from 2001 to 2009.
According to the Palace proclamation, Robredo’s “outstanding performance” as Naga City Mayor earned him various awards such as the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service in 2000.
Robredo was appointed as Interior and Local Secretary by former President Benigno Aquino III in 2010.
On Aug. 18, 2012, Robredo died after the aircraft carrying him crashed off Masbate province.
“[H]is many virtues as a public servant have permanently earned him the gratitude of the City he led, and the Republic he served,” read the proclamation.
