Following Duterte’s call, Oriental Mindoro Rep. Umali says they’ll hasten impeachment bid vs Sereno
Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali will heed the call of President Rodrigo Duterte to hasten the impeachment proceedings against Supreme Court Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Umali, the chairman of the powerful House Justice committee, said that they have “more than enough” evidence sufficient to oust the embattled Sereno.
Umali’s committee has already approved the articles of impeachment against the chief justice on-leave before the Congress went on a break last March.
“We will comply with the order of President Rodrigo Duterte to hasten the impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice Sereno,” said Umali.
“I believe that we have more than enough evidence to oust the chief magistrate,” the Oriental Mindoro solon added.
President Duterte recently declared that Sereno is now his “enemy” and ordered his allies in Congress to fast-track the impeachment of Sereno.
Sereno, an appointee of former President Benigno Aquino III, is also facing a quo warranto petition to oust her as chief magistrate before the Supreme Court.
The quo warranto petition was initiated by Solicitor General Joss Calida.
