Rep. Ramirez-Sato highlights ‘winning attitude’ as MIMAROPA RAA returns to Occidental Mindoro after 48 years

Whether in sports or in life, it is all about having a “winning attitude,” Occidental Mindoro Rep. Josephine Ramirez-Sato said during the opening ceremony of the 2018 MIMAROPA Regional Athletic Association Sports Meet.

This year’s 2018 MIMAROPA RAA Meet returned to San Jose, Occidental Mindoro after 48 years.

“To my mind, a winning attitude is about being competitive and determined and unyielding in the face of a challenge. Masipag at matiyaga, at hindi umaatras sa anumang laban. Manalo o matalo, sports lang,” the lady solon said.

Sato highligthed that defeat should not be a reason to yield or surrender, whether in sports or in life’s everyday struggle.

Sato added there is a “lodi” or sports idol in every athlete, but said that every athlete must work hard to succeed, citing Carlos “The Big Difference” Loyzaga, who was born in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, Loyzaga became a Philippine basketball hero and legend.

“Kaya wag susuko hanggang magtagumpay tayo sa larangan ng sports, at gayundin sa mga pagsubok sa buhay balang araw. Kaya para manalo tayo, wag susuko at practice pa more!” Sato said.

Senator Loren Legarda wad the keynote speaker and guest of honor. Other key officials of Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Marinduque, and Palawan were present during the ceremony.

A total of 4, 217 delegates representing Palawan, Puerto Princesa City, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Marinduque, Calapan City and Occidental Mindoro will be competing in various individual and team categories and sporting competition starting March 12 to 16, 2018.

Occidental Mindoro has the biggest delegation with 1,226 athletes, coaches, and trainers followed by Oriental Mindoro with 630. Palawan came in 3rd with a total of 619 delegates; Puerto Princesa City come in next with a total of 585. Calapan City has a total of 440 delegates while Romblon and Marinduque sent 387 and 330 delegates, respectively.

The annual event, with the MIMAROPA – Regional Athletic Association then known as the Southern Tagalog Athletic Association or STAA – was last held in Occidental Mindoro in 1970

Formally opening the event and welcoming the participants and specials guests in behalf of Occidental Mindoro’s were Governor Gene Mendiola and Vice Governor Peter Alfaro.

This year’s sports meet has the theme: “Becoming A Champion Through Winning Attitude”

“MIMAROPA is not MIMAROPA without Mindoro, the same way MIMAROPA is not complete without Marinduque, or Romblon, or Palawan. Again, even in sports, let us start to show that we are competitive, but are one in terms of hope and aspiration, which is to shine and achieve our dreams for our beloved family, schools, our towns and province and in sum, the MIMAROPA Region. Paano natin magagawa yan? Ng Sama sama, Syempre!,” Sato concluded.
