Listen to mayors, local leaders not the noisy mob in Metro Manila: No-el 2018 – Umali
Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali believes that the voice incumbent mayors and barangay captains should prevail instead of the noisy mob from Metro Manila who are opposing his proposal to postpone the barangay and Sangguninang Kabataan (SK) elections scheduled in May 2018.
In an interview with DZBB anchor Weng Salvacion, Umalis likened the debate on the postponement of the barangay and SK elections to 2019 to the debate on whether President Rodrigo Duterte should have declared and extended martial law in Mindanao.
He said that whuile residents in Mindanao have “overwhelmingly” endorsed Duterte’s action, non-Mindanao residents especially in Metro Manila have been the loudest critics of martial law.
And the bigger picture in Mindanao is that martial law is effective and business sector is happier with martial law in Mindanao,” said Umali.
Duterte had postponed the barangay and SK elections scheduled in October last year.
Umali filed a bill postponing the barangay and SK elections to the 2019 mid-term elections to give Congress time to craft a draft charter change and hold the plebiscite along with the election of senators, representatives , and local government officials.
