Umali pushes for yet another postponement of barangay, SK polls

Feb 9, 2018 @ 14:05

Oriental Mindoro second-district Rep. Rey Umali wants the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to be postponed again to give Congress time to pass a new federal Constitution.

“Bakit ko nasabi yun? No-el kasi masyado nang masikip ang Mayo, kailangan naming mabuo yung konstitusyon para magkaroon ng plebisito. Papaano namin magagawa yun in two months? Hindi namin kaya. Actually one month na lang kasi Pebrero na rin ngayon so isang buwan na lang ang kailangan,” the chairman of the House committee on justice said.

“Papaano namin matatapos yun? So ako ang aking tinutulak ay yung Barangay at SK elections ay ipagpaliban natin para maka-concentrate kami doon sa pagbabalangkas ng magandang porma ng gobyerno-federal in support of President Digong sa campaign promise at saka yung Charter change mismo,” he added.

If Umali’s proposal gets the backing of Congress, this will be the third postponement of the barangay and SK elections during the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Last October, Congress passed a law moving the barangay and SK elections to May 2018 following an earlier postponement the year before.

Umali said it was Congress not the executive that can decide whether to postpone or go through with the elections.

“Nasa Kongreso yun, hindi po sa ehekutibo. Kami po ang magpapasa ng batas. Nag-file na po ako ng bill para ipagpaliban yung barangay election. Pag yun ay sinusugan ng aming mga kasama at alam mo naman sa Kongreso may supermajority ay palagay ko ay mangyayari yun,” he said.

Umali said the current barangay and SK officials should retain their positions in a holdover capacity until another election is held.
