Palawan earmarks P10M this year for palay industry to boost rice sufficiency rate
The Provincial Government of Palawan has set aside P10 million for the palay industry for 2018 to boost the province’s rice sufficiency rate through the hybrid rice commercialization program.
“Napag-alaman mula sa Office of the Provincial Agriculturists (OPA) na mayroong kabuuang P10 Milyon pondo. Pangunahing layunin ng programa ang pagsusulong ng hybrid rice commercialization program na nasa ilalim ng programang Productivity Rice Enhancement and Development o (PRED),” the province said.
The Palawan provincial government said that the province had 133% rice sufficiency rate in 2016.
Although the rice sufficiency rate is enough, Jane Buenaobra, Acting Officer in-Charge ng OPA said that other factors such as influx of tourists and calamities should be considered.
“Ang reported rice sufficiency natin ay nasa 133 % which is sufficient. But, considering we have tourists coming in and out of the province, we have to cater them as well. So hindi sya enough,” Buenaobra was quoted as saying.
“Sooner or later magkakaroon tayo ng kakulangan especially may mga calamities na nangyayari sa province,” she added.
Based on the 5-Year Comprehensive Action Plan of the province drafted last year during the Provincial Rice Summit, the Palawan province targets 150% sufficiency rate this year.
Through the hybrid commercialization, Buenaobra believes that the target rate is doable.
“Kabilang sa programa ang pag-iimbita sa mga nais mamuhunan sa lalawigan na makakatulong umano sa pagsulong ng hybrid rice commercialization,” said the province.
“Ang industriya ng pagpapalay sa lalawigan ang isa sa pinatututukan ni Gobernador Jose Ch. Alvarez ngayong taon sa pamunuan ng OPA upang matulungan ang mga magsasakang Palaweño at tuluyang maging self-sufficient ang lalawigan sa produksyon ng palay,” it added.
