Rep. Ramirez-Sato’s bill creating PUP branch in Occidental Mindro hurdles House
The establishment of a Polytechnic University of the Philippines branch in Occidental Mindoro is one step closer into fruition as the bill seeking to create the same has recently hurdled the House of Representatives.
House Bill 6915 or An Act Seeking to Establish a Branch of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in the Municipality of Sablayan to be known as the PUP Sablayan Branch was approved last Monday by the lower house.
Occidental Mindoro Rep. Josephine Ramirez-Sato authored the said bill.
“I am hopeful that the proposed measure will undergo smooth sailing and will be supported by the bicameral committee for approval,” Sato was quoted as saying.
The counterpart measure of the bill at the Senate, Senate Bill No. 1103 introduced by Senator Joseph Victor G. Ejercito has already been approved last December.
Sato said PUP Sablayan Branch is expected to boost agricultural development in the province through research and extension.
Under the proposed measure, the PUP Sablayan Branch will undertake research and extension services. Sato highlighted the importance of increasing agricultural production in the province – a major producer of rice, root crops, and salt.
Once signed into law, the PUP Sablayan Branch will offer graduate, undergraduate and short-term technical-vocational courses within its areas of specialization.
“With the passage of this legislative measure, expenses for the operation of the PUP Sablayan Branch shall be charged against the National Budget through the annual General Appropriations Act (GAA). This will lessen the burden of the concerned LGU. With the additional savings as a result of this law, they can focus more on educational support programs or infrastructure projects that will benefit the people,” Sato said.
Occidental Mindoro serves around 50,000 Elementary and 20,000 high school students. “Our vision is for them to aspire tertiary education in the province and take in-demand courses in agriculture and tourism. The creation of PUP Sablayan Branch answers to these demands from its offered courses in Associate in Agri-Business, Bachelor of Cooperatives and Associate in Tourism Management,” she said.
