Lagman doesn’t trust Duterte wielding martial law powers
Albay Representative Edcel Lagman does not trust President Rodrigo Duterte in wielding the power to declare martial law.
Lagman made this known when he was asked during the oral arguments before the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday (June 14) over the petitions which sought the nullification of President Rodrigo Duterte’s Proclamation No. 216 which declared martial law and suspension of habeas corpus over Mindanao.
“Unfortunately, I do not,” replied Lagman to the question of SC Justice Noel Tijam.
Lagman, who was among the petitioners, has always been vocal against a repeat of the atrocities committed under the martial law rule of late strongman Ferrdinand Marcos.
Duterte has always praised Marcos for having declared martial law.
On the other hand, Lagman assured the petition was filed not because it was declared by Duterte.
“We filed this petition because there is no sufficient actual basis. If there was we are not going to file this petition,” he told the high tribunal.
