Lagman: human rights violations taking place in Mindanao
Albay Representative Edcel Lagman fear that human rights violations have taken place following the declaration of martial law in Mindanao.
“They are the aftermath of an ill-conceived declaration,” said Lagman during the oral arguments at the Supreme Court (SC) over the petitions seeking the nullification President Rodrigo Duterte’s Proclamation No. 216 which declared martial law over Mindanao.
“This will not in any way validate the continuance of martial law,” he argued.
Lagman who was one of the petitioners has opposed the declaration of martial law for fear of a repeat of atrocities committed during the martial law rule of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos.
Meanwhile, Lagman said he will give copies to the SC documentations made by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) of violations which have taken place in Mindanao.
“We will attach in our memorandum by the IBP correspondence by the IBP Lanao del Sur which documents the unprecedented violation of human rights and civil liberties in Mindanao, in Marawi and in Lanao del Sur consequent to the issuance of Proclamation No. 216,” he said.
