Aray! Here’s how much Bicol farmers owe gov’t on irrigation

Farmers in the Bicol region reportedly owe the government between P500 million and P800 million in irrigation costs.

Thus, bared National Irrigation Administration (NIA)-Bicol Spokesman Ed Yu in a Brigada FM News Naga report Wednesday, April 19.

Of the six provinces in Region 5, Yu said that Camarines Sur has the biggest debt since it has the widest irrigation as far as crop lands are concerned.

Yu said that the figure was accumulated from records beginning in 1984. He said that the “true” debt owed by local farmers to NIA is even bigger since it would cover the amortization of the communal irrigation system.

Yu said that the agency will continue to go after farmers regarding their debt until a law preventing them to do so is passed.
